The Importance of Preserving Your Focus and Intentions.

Have you ever been focused on something, and everything is going well but you decide to pick up the phone and call a friend...and not just any friend, you call that one friend that has a thousand and one opinions about you and your decisions. Typically, negative opinions. Now, in their head they're trying to help, you know, be a good friend....or maybe they're just being an asshole. Either way, they're often time unsolicited opinions on you and your decisions cloud your mind. They creep in like a morning fog to block every clear thought you may have had prior. This causes you to become confused, make pre-mature or rushed decisions, and lose track of your vision and goals altogether. This causes you to question yourself and your ability to make sound decisions for yourself. And eventually results in you being unsure and insecure about yourself, your decisions, and your intentions. I remember back in 2013 right after graduated with my bachelor's degree, I had decided that I wanted to go to grad school in Miami. I did my research, talked with admissions, and sent over a few pre-application documents. Even though I was in the beginning stages of applying I was really excited because I thought it would be a great opportunity. I had never lived outside of my home city and doing so I felt would give me a different experience. This news was so good that I had to call a good friend (now ex-friend) and tell him my intentions. Well, this didn't go over how I thought it would. He provided many words of discouragement. He complained about the how much it would cost me, he questioned why I wanted to go to grad school in the first place and encouraged me to rethink this decision I was making for myself and my future. Fast forward almost 10 years, I am SO happy that I decided to focus on my intentions and goals for myself. If I had listened to this friend, I would have robbed myself of a master's degree, precious career experiences, important relationships with people, and countless other influential life experiences. I would not be where I am today if it were not for me sticking to my intentions and focusing on what I wanted for my life. My advice, follow your heart, stay focused on what you want for your life. It is immensely important to surround yourself with people who will respect your intentions and offer advice that is helpful, not discouraging. Stay focused and stay happy ;-)
